A small business SEO checklist for Bangalore comes down to six jobs done in order: connect Search Console and Analytics, verify your Google Business Profile, write one page for each service, add area pages with real detail, collect reviews steadily, and track calls and enquiries. Most owners can finish the first three in a month.
This checklist is written for owners who want to do the work themselves, or to check what an agency is doing. If you would rather hand it over, our small business SEO service in Bangalore covers every step below.
Before you start: three accounts you must own
Set up these three in your own Google account, not in a freelancer’s or an agency’s. If someone else set them up, ask to be made an owner today. Getting access back from a former vendor is slow and sometimes impossible.
- Google Search Console: shows which searches bring people to your site and which pages Google has trouble reading. It is free.
- Google Analytics 4: shows what visitors do once they arrive. Add events for phone-number taps, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions.
- Google Business Profile: your listing on Google Search and Maps. Verification can take days, and Google may ask for a video of your premises, so start this first.
Days 1 to 30: set up and fix
1. Complete your Google Business Profile
Choose the most specific primary category (for example “Dental clinic” rather than “Dentist” if that describes you better), and add the services you actually sell. Enter hours, including holiday hours. Upload photos of your real premises, team and work. Use your real business name only. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get a profile suspended. Point the website button to the most relevant page, which is often a service page and not the homepage. Our guide to creating a Google Business Profile walks through the setup.
2. Check your site on a real phone
Open your site on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data. Can you read it, tap the call button and find your address without pinching the screen? Google’s Core Web Vitals give targets you can test with PageSpeed Insights: the largest element loads within 2.5 seconds, the page responds to taps within 200 milliseconds, and layout does not jump (a shift score under 0.1). Compress images first. It is the fastest fix on most small sites.
3. Fix the basics that block indexing
- Every page has one clear heading and a title written for a searcher, not a keyword list.
- The site runs on HTTPS, and the www and non-www versions go to one address.
- You have no duplicate versions of the same page.
- Your contact page shows the same name, address and phone number as your profile.
4. Write one page for each service
A page called “Services” with six bullet points will not rank for six services. Give each service its own page with: who it is for, what is involved, a starting price or range if you can share one, how long it takes, photos or examples of your own work, and answers to the questions customers ask you on calls. Do this for your most profitable service first.
Days 31 to 60: build local proof
5. Add area pages, but only where you work
People in Bangalore search by neighbourhood: “physio in Jayanagar”, “CA in Malleshwaram”. A page for each area you genuinely serve can help. Each one needs its own detail: roads and landmarks customers know, the kind of work you have done there, how long it takes you to reach them. Do not copy one page thirty times and swap the area name. Google’s spam policies include a section on scaled content abuse, which covers many pages produced mainly to rank. Our summary of Google’s 2026 updates lists the dates and what each one targeted.
6. Ask for reviews every week
Send a WhatsApp message with your review link after every completed job or visit, or put a QR code at the counter. Reply to every review within a few days, including the bad ones, in a calm and specific way. Do not offer discounts for reviews, and do not ask staff or relatives to post them. Google’s review policies prohibit both. How reviews feed into map results is covered in how reviews affect Google Maps rankings.
7. Make your business details match everywhere
Your name, address and phone number should read the same on Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Justdial, Sulekha and any industry directory where you are listed. Pick the ten that matter to your category and fix those. Ignore anyone who offers to submit you to five hundred directories. Details on doing this properly are in our guide to local citation building for Bangalore businesses.
8. Track enquiries, not just visits
Count calls, WhatsApp chats and form fills, and note where each came from. Ask new customers how they found you and write the answer down. A month of this tells you more about what is working than any ranking tool.
Days 61 to 90: publish, then check
9. Write two or three guides that answer real questions
List the ten questions customers ask you most often on calls and WhatsApp. Each becomes a guide. Give the answer in the first two or three sentences, then explain. Put your name and role on it, and the date it was last updated. A guide that answers one specific question in plain sentences is easier for Google and for AI tools to quote.
10. Improve weak pages before writing new ones
In Search Console, open the Pages or Queries report and look for pages with impressions but almost no clicks. Rewrite their titles and descriptions to match what the searcher wanted. Add a short FAQ. This often does more than a new article.
11. Run your first monthly check
Review the five numbers in the image above. Write down what changed and one thing to fix next month. Keep the record in a simple sheet. Three months of notes tell you whether to continue, change direction or get help.
How Google decides who appears first on the map
Google’s own help page for Business Profiles says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the person, or from the area they typed. Prominence is how well known you are, based on reviews, links and mentions across the web.
You cannot change where you are, but you can write pages for the areas you serve and set your service areas accurately. Relevance and prominence are where your effort pays: complete categories and services, service pages, and a steady stream of honest reviews.
What Google’s recent updates mean for this checklist
In March 2024 Google folded its helpful content system into its core ranking systems, so writing for customers is now part of how every page is judged. Its spam policies also name scaled content abuse, site reputation abuse and expired domain abuse. For a small business the practical rules are short:
- Write each page for a customer with a real question, not to fill a keyword list.
- Put a real author, a real business name and a real address on every guide.
- Do not buy links, and do not publish dozens of near-identical pages, whether written by people or by AI tools.
- Keep pages current. Update the date only when the content really changed.
Core and spam updates roll out several times a year, and our Google SEO updates guide keeps the dates in one place.
Will this get you into AI answers?
Google states that its AI features in Search rely on the same foundations as ordinary SEO: your page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and it must be helpful. There is no extra tag to add. Other AI tools such as ChatGPT also draw on public pages, and on what other sites say about a business. The checklist above already does most of the work. To improve your chances further:
- State the answer first on every page, in plain sentences.
- Keep your name, address, phone number and services identical everywhere.
- Add LocalBusiness and FAQ structured data that matches the text visitors can see.
- Earn mentions from local directories, trade bodies and news sites that are real and relevant.
Nobody can guarantee a citation. If you want a plan that covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI answers, see our AI SEO services in Bangalore.
What to skip
- Bulk directory submissions and bought links.
- Keywords added to your Google Business Profile name.
- Promises of a guaranteed first page. Google says no one can promise this.
- Publishing large volumes of thin articles. Two good guides beat twenty weak ones.
Do it yourself or hire help?
If you have a few hours a week and can edit your site, you can complete the first 30 days alone. Hire help when you have no time, need pages and guides written, or compete in a crowded category. Frequently asked questions
How long does a small business SEO checklist take to complete?
Most owners can finish the setup steps, meaning tracking, Google Business Profile and service pages, in the first month. Area pages, reviews and guides take another two months. Results from SEO usually take three to six months to show, and nobody can promise a position.
Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?
A profile can bring calls quickly, so verify it first. A website lets you rank for each service and area, show proof of your work and answer customer questions. Relying only on a profile means depending on one listing that Google controls and can change.
How many reviews does a small business need?
There is no magic number. Google looks at review quality, recency and your replies, and compares you with nearby competitors. Look at the three businesses ranking above you and aim to match their pace. Ask every happy customer, reply to every review, and never buy or exchange reviews.
Does SEO help a small business show up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers?
Google says its AI features rely on the same SEO basics: indexed pages, snippet eligibility, and helpful content. Other AI tools also draw on pages that state facts clearly and on what other sites say about you. It can improve your chances of being cited, but no one can guarantee it.
Should I hire an SEO agency or do this myself?
Do the setup yourself if you have a few hours a week and a site you can edit. Hire help when you lack time, need content written, or compete in a crowded category. Ask any agency for written deliverables and access to every account. Our Local SEO packages start at Rs 15,000 a month.
