Google released seven algorithm updates between February and September 2026, more than any comparable period in its history. Three were core updates (including the first Discover-only core update) and four were spam updates targeting scaled content abuse, AI-generated filler, and thin affiliate pages. This guide covers every confirmed 2026 update with rollout dates, verified data, and specific steps to recover or protect your rankings.

That is seven updates in eight months. Compare that to five total confirmed updates in all of 2024. Google is updating faster, and the gap between each spam update is shrinking. The March, June, August, and September spam updates landed roughly 90 days apart, which matches what we see internally across our 650+ client sites: ranking stability windows are getting shorter.
1. February 2026 Discover Core Update (Feb 5 to Feb 27)
This was the first Discover-only core update Google ever announced. It did not affect regular search results at all. It only changed what appeared in the Google Discover feed.
What changed in Discover
Google made three specific changes to Discover ranking:
- Local relevance: Discover started prioritising content from websites based in the user’s country. A Bangalore publisher writing about Indian tech topics saw better Discover visibility for Indian users than a US-based site covering the same story.
- Clickbait reduction: Sensational headlines and misleading thumbnails were demoted. Google said during testing that “people find the Discover experience more useful and worthwhile with this update.”
- Expertise signals: In-depth, original content from sites with demonstrated topic expertise rose in Discover. Surface-level news rewrites dropped.
Who was affected
The rollout started with English-language US users and expanded globally through March. Non-US publishers who created content primarily for American audiences saw reduced Discover traffic during the initial phase. Indian publishers targeting Indian audiences were largely unaffected or saw gains.
For Bangalore businesses that rely on Discover traffic, the action step is straightforward: make sure your Google Business Profile location and your site’s geographic signals match your actual audience.
2. March 2026 Spam Update (Mar 24 to Mar 25)
This was a fast, one-day spam update that completed in under 24 hours. Google described it as targeting standard spam policy violations. It was smaller in scope than the later spam updates in June and August.
Sites using obvious link schemes, keyword stuffing, cloaking, or doorway pages were hit. If your site follows standard on-page SEO and off-page SEO guidelines, you were likely unaffected.
3. March 2026 Core Update (Mar 27 to Apr 8)
Landing just three days after the spam update, the March 2026 core update ran for 12 days and showed substantially higher volatility than the December 2025 core update.
What Google rewarded
The March core update moved visibility toward primary sources. Official institutions, direct brand destinations, and specialist publishers with deep topical focus gained rankings. Generic aggregators, broad comparison directories, and sites that repackaged information from stronger sources lost ground.
Specific patterns we observed across our client sites:
- Official/institutional sources gained: Government agencies and research institutions ranked higher for fact-based queries.
- Direct brand destinations strengthened: E-commerce sites and service providers moved up for commercial search terms.
- Specialist publishers outperformed generalists: Sites with narrow expertise and deep content on specific topics gained over broad utility sites.
- Aggregators and thin directories lost: Templated “best of” pages and roundups with no original analysis dropped.
Sectors most affected
Travel, jobs, health, finance, and retail all showed preference shifts toward direct endpoints and trusted specialists. For Indian businesses, this means your actual service page on your own domain matters more than a listing on a third-party directory. If you run an SEO agency in Bangalore, your own site’s service pages carry more weight than your profile on a review aggregator.
4. May 2026 Core Update (May 21 to Jun 2)
The May 2026 core update was the most significant ranking event of the year. Glenn Gabe, one of the most respected algorithm analysts in the industry, called it “much more like a typical core update” compared to the weaker March version. Visible ranking shifts began 48 hours after rollout started, on May 23.
Data from 4,000 sites (Raptive study)
Raptive published the most comprehensive data set, covering 4,000 sites across multiple verticals:
- 70% of sites were resilient, either improving or maintaining performance.
- 36% of sites improved compared to pre-update baselines.
- 33% stayed consistent with no meaningful change.
- The remaining ~31% experienced meaningful declines.
Quality signals that mattered
The Raptive data identified specific quality signals correlated with better performance:
- Lower ad density: Sites with fewer ads per page performed better. Medium density settings worked best, especially for food and lifestyle verticals.
- Authority scores above 35: Sites with a Semrush Authority Score above 35 outperformed those below.
- Content freshness: Top performers published 7+ content updates monthly and kept average content age under 24 months.
- Content depth: Pages averaging 1,200+ words performed better. Sites with fewer than 6% of pages under 500 words ranked higher.
- Audience engagement: Top performers averaged 10,000+ monthly email pageviews and 40,000+ monthly Pinterest pageviews, signals of real audience loyalty.
YMYL categories hit hardest
Health and finance sites experienced the earliest and most severe volatility. The gambling sector was “particularly affected” as an ultra-YMYL category, with dramatic ranking swings. Two concentrated “tremors” occurred during rollout, with the final tremor around June 2 causing some sites to drop from Google Discover entirely.
AI content results were mixed
Sites using aggressive tactics to rank in AI Search features saw mixed results. Some dropped, some stabilised, some increased. Grokipedia, a 100% AI-generated content site, actually surged during May after crashing in February. However, sites translating low-quality content across multiple languages with AI experienced heavy penalties.
The takeaway: Google is not penalising AI content categorically. It is penalising low-quality, unreviewed, mass-produced content regardless of how it was created. This aligns with what we advise clients in our SEO services guide: quality and originality matter more than the production method.
5. June 2026 Spam Update (Jun 24 to Jun 26)
The June spam update completed in two days and was described as “a bit bigger than the March 2026 spam update.” Google confirmed it targeted standard spam policies across all languages and locations.
Like all spam updates, some non-spamming sites were caught as false positives. If your traffic dropped during this window and you are confident your site follows Google’s spam policies, it is worth filing a reconsideration request through Search Console. Check your site against Google’s spam policies documentation first.
6. August 2026 Spam Update (Aug 18 to Aug 21)
The August spam update was the most aggressive spam action of 2026. It completed in under three days but caused significant damage to sites violating content-related spam policies.
What August targeted specifically
Based on case study analysis by Glenn Gabe at GSQI, the August update targeted five specific categories:
- Scaled content abuse: Sites mass-producing hundreds or thousands of low-value pages. One site with 1.5 million indexed URLs lost site-wide visibility because approximately 85% of its pages were programmatic.
- AI-generated filler: Content created without human review, expertise, or genuine value-add. An ultra-YMYL health site lost 200,000+ query rankings through combined programmatic and AI-generated content scaling.
- Programmatic content: Automatically generated pages with minimal unique information per page.
- Thin affiliate pages: Sites offering nothing beyond product links without substantive reviews. One Amazon affiliate site using a turn-key setup with AI-filled content lost 14,000+ query rankings.
- Deceptive redirects: A high-risk niche site with 250,000 URLs that redirected users to more aggressive sites lost approximately 25,000 query rankings.
Recovery from August spam penalties
Recovery from spam update penalties requires more than content fixes. You need to:
- Identify and remove every page that violates Google’s spam policies.
- Stop the behaviour that triggered the penalty completely.
- Publish genuinely original, expert content consistently for multiple months.
- Earn legitimate backlinks through real outreach and value creation.
- File a reconsideration request once you have documented evidence of changes.
Recovery timelines after significant spam actions typically run 4 to 8 months, sometimes longer for sites with extensive violations.
7. September 2026 Spam Update (Sep 24, Rolling Out)
The September spam update started on September 24, 2026 and Google said it may take up to two weeks to complete. This is the fourth spam update of 2026, following March, June, and August.
At the time of this update, the September rollout is still in progress. We will update this section with confirmed data once it completes. Based on the pattern of 2026 spam updates, sites that survived August should watch their Search Console data closely for the next two weeks.
If you notice a sudden drop in impressions or clicks starting around September 24, check your site against the same spam policies that August targeted: scaled content, AI filler, thin affiliates, and deceptive redirects.
AI Search and Zero-Click: The Bigger Picture
While algorithm updates reshape who ranks where, a larger shift is changing how search works entirely. The 2026 data on zero-click searches and AI-powered results tells a story that every business owner needs to understand.
68% of Google searches now end without a click
According to SparkToro’s 2026 analysis of Similarweb panel data covering January through April 2026:
- 68.01% of Google searches in 2026 ended with zero clicks. That is up from 60.45% in 2024 and 49% in 2019.
- Click-through rates to organic results dropped by 9.51 percentage points (a 22.9% decline) compared to 2024.
- The zero-click rate grew by 7.5 percentage points in just two years (2024 to 2026), compared to 11.5 points over the previous five years (2019 to 2024). The acceleration is real.
AI Overviews are expanding but AI Mode is still small
AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of all search queries. When an AI Overview is displayed, click-through rates to organic results drop by nearly 60%. That is a massive impact on traffic for queries where AI Overviews trigger.
Google’s AI Mode, the deeper conversational search experience, was used for only 0.34% of searches between January and April 2026. Google claims AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion monthly users with queries “more than doubling every quarter,” but actual search volume share remains small.
What this means for Indian businesses
For businesses in Bangalore and across India, the zero-click trend creates urgency around three strategies:
- Brand building matters more than ever. When users cannot click through to your page, they need to recognise your brand name in the AI-generated answer. Brand mentions and citations in AI outputs are the new visibility metric.
- Optimise for GEO and LLM visibility. Structure your content so that AI systems (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) can cite it accurately. This means clear factual statements, structured data, and authoritative sourcing.
- Diversify traffic sources. Relying 100% on Google organic traffic is riskier than ever. Email lists, WhatsApp communities, direct traffic through brand recognition, and social platforms all reduce your dependency on any single search engine.
Recovery and Adaptation Strategies for 2026
Whether you were hit by a core update, a spam update, or the gradual erosion of zero-click losses, here is what works in the second half of 2026.
If you were hit by a core update (March or May)
- Audit your content for depth and originality. The May update rewarded pages averaging 1,200+ words with genuine expertise.
- Reduce ad density. Lower ad loads correlated with better performance across 4,000 sites studied.
- Publish at least 7 content updates per month. Keep average content age under 24 months.
- Build real audience engagement metrics: email subscribers, social followers who actually visit your site.
- Focus on becoming the primary source for your topic, not an aggregator or repackager of other people’s information.
If you were hit by a spam update (March, June, August, or September)
- Audit every page on your site against Google’s current spam policies.
- Remove or substantially rewrite any scaled, programmatic, or AI-generated pages that lack genuine editorial oversight.
- Check for thin affiliate content: if a page exists only to link to product pages without adding original analysis, testing, or comparison data, it is a liability.
- Verify there are no deceptive redirects, cloaking, or hidden text anywhere on your site.
- Build a documented trail of improvements before filing a reconsideration request.
Proactive steps for everyone
- Run a full technical SEO audit quarterly. Core Web Vitals, crawlability, and indexing health are baseline requirements.
- Strengthen your local SEO presence if you serve a specific geographic market. The Discover update and core updates both favour local relevance signals.
- Invest in off-page SEO techniques that build real authority: digital PR, expert contributions, data-driven content that earns natural links.
- Monitor Google’s Search Status Dashboard for update announcements. You should know about a new rollout within 24 hours, not weeks later when traffic has already dropped.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Google algorithm updates happened in 2026?
Google confirmed seven algorithm updates between February and September 2026: three core updates (February Discover, March, and May) and four spam updates (March, June, August, and September). The September spam update is still rolling out as of late September 2026.
What did the May 2026 core update target?
The May 2026 core update rewarded content depth (1,200+ word averages), lower ad density, high authority scores (Semrush AS above 35), regular content freshness (7+ updates monthly), and genuine audience engagement. YMYL categories like health, finance, and gambling saw the most volatility. Data from 4,000 sites showed 70% were resilient while roughly 31% experienced meaningful declines.
Is AI-generated content penalised by Google in 2026?
Not categorically. Google penalises low-quality, mass-produced content regardless of production method. The August 2026 spam update hit sites using AI to generate thousands of thin pages without editorial oversight. However, sites using AI as a writing tool with human review, original research, and genuine expertise were not penalised. One 100% AI-generated site (Grokipedia) even gained traffic during the May core update, though analysts predict that will not last.
What percentage of Google searches are zero-click in 2026?
68.01% of Google searches between January and April 2026 ended without a click to any website, according to SparkToro’s analysis of Similarweb data. That is up from 60.45% in 2024 and 49% in 2019. AI Overviews, which appear on 20%+ of queries, reduce organic click-through rates by nearly 60% when displayed.
How long does recovery take after a Google spam update?
Recovery from spam update penalties typically takes 4 to 8 months after you have removed violating content, stopped the penalised behaviour, and filed a reconsideration request. Some sites with extensive violations take longer. Sites hit by the January 2026 commodity content penalties showed no recovery through the May core update, with some declining further.
Should Indian businesses worry about Google’s 2026 changes?
Yes, but not all changes are negative. The February Discover update actually favoured local Indian publishers over US-based sites covering Indian topics. The core updates reward specialist publishers with genuine expertise, which benefits focused Indian businesses over generic global aggregators. The primary risk is the zero-click trend reducing organic traffic volumes, which makes brand building and diversified traffic sources essential.
What is the next Google algorithm update expected in 2026?
The September 2026 spam update started on September 24 and may take up to two weeks to complete. Based on the 2026 pattern, Google has released updates roughly every 6 to 10 weeks. A core update in Q4 2026 is likely but not confirmed. Monitor the Google Search Status Dashboard for official announcements.
